After each New Collection Launch we receive emails regarding customizing designs and sizes of art and our process. Maybe you didn’t see a piece that works for your wall and you’d like to specify the size, design and colors. If you’ve ever reached out to us for a commissioned art piece, then you know the first step in our process is to link you up with a designer, if you’re not already working with one. We have found that commissioning artwork is a delicate process that really thrives when we have an interior designer in the loop.

Thankfully, we have a well-curated roster of interior designers who have worked with me and my team to come up with the perfect piece of artwork for our client’s spaces many times over. This is why the Designer Spotlight is such a beneficial tool for us to share with you. Through the Designer Spotlight Blog we are able to introduce you to designers we love! You get the opportunity to see their styles and various ways they have included my artwork in their projects, plus get a feel for their personalities.

Enter Lindsey Borchard of Lindsey Brooke Design. If you can’t tell by the warm smile then you’ll definitely see in the portfolio of projects below why we love LBD. With a talent for bringing the outside in; a dedication to timeless design; and a passion for custom furniture and artwork, the team at LBD is a firm we love to recommend when you’re wanting to commission artwork. Take a peek below and get to know the talented woman at the head of Lindsey Brooke Designs and then let us know when you’re ready to commission the perfect piece of artwork for your space!

Hi, Lindsey! Thanks so much for being a part of our Designer Spotlight series. Tell us a little about yourself.

I started designing in my twenties right after finishing fashion design school, and then I had a brief 3 year career on the sales side for a Home Decor company that ended in 2008. I took time off from design to focus on getting married and growing my family which was really important to me. It wasn't until 2015 that I realized design was my passion. This happened by chance, it was something I was doing on the side to fill my days with creativity. My parents were remodeling their new home, my best friend needed help furnishing hers. It happend fast, and organically and I haven't looked back since. During the first year or so of my business we welcomed our second baby and when he was about 1 years old I decided to become full time in my business. Three years later I have 3 employees and we are finally moving out of my home office and into our own space. I live in Thousand Oaks, CA with my two boys James (6) and Beau (4) and my husband of 10 years, Quinn.

“when we are designing homes for our clients we’re constantly asking ourselves how we can make the space feel more unique and special. and most of the time the answer is to make something custom.”

How would you describe your design style?

Our design style is an “elevated California casual aesthetic” that is functional and beautiful for the everyday family.

Can you give our readers a few tips to recreate this style in their own home?

1. Have all your big pieces really timeless and in neutral colors (sofas, beds, etc).

2. Pop in colors with accent pieces like rugs, pillows and art.

3. Always mix in interesting goods, either found/vintage items, an original piece of art, or heirloom pieces that will tell a story.

“we use so many custom pieces in our clients’ homes, and there’s so many different ways you can do that. from furniture, rugs, and art just to name a few.”

Your designs seamlessly tie into the natural elements/landscapes around your projects. What is the best way you’ve found to incorporate unique elements into your designs that complement the home’s surroundings?

We do this by starting with a color palette that surrounds the home like the ocean, hill tops, mountains etc. and use this to guide us through the design project. We also get to know our clients and use their interests to add character to their home decor. This can be as simple as a piece of art, adding more playful patterns to a space, or customizing a piece or two of furniture etc.

Prior to design you were an artist yourself! Do you find it difficult to pitch artwork to your clients? How do you encourage them to incorporate one-of-a-kind pieces in their newly designed spaces?

I find it difficult ALL THE TIME. Art is so personal so I have to remember that when my clients are picking art for their home. Some don't care and will just let me pick things because they have similar style as I do. It's harder when our clients like something that doesn't speak to me. I am a super feely person when it comes to art. I want to connect with a piece and its super important to me to LOVE it in my home. So when I am trying to encourage them to get something I try to add a personal experience from either myself or them to it so they connect and its harder for them to turn it down.

Let’s talk about some recent residential projects, the North Ranch Project and the Beach to The Burbs homes. You incorporated Lauren’s fiber art into both of these designs. Why did you choose Lauren’s work?

In the North Ranch Project my clients wanted something different, I had seen Lauren on Instagram but never bought her pieces, when it arrived we were all blown away with the craftsmanship, the beauty and how personal it felt for my clients. Even though the “Sandstorm” piece wasn't commissioned for them it felt as it was truly made for their home. That’s what original art does. It makes you feel special, and makes your home feel more personal.

After using Lauren’s art in their project I just fell in LOVE with her tapestries. The Beach to the Burbs clients wanted awesome, original pieces in their home so I knew it would be an easy sell but finding the perfect piece was a little hard. We finally chose the “Blue Lagoon” because my clients had moved from a beach town and were surfers and it reminded them of their last home. It was a way they connected with the piece and it checked off all the boxes for me. It was the perfect way to add color to the space, its a talking point for their guests and makes them feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Thats what art should do for the home.

What/who are some pieces/artists/makers/products you’re excited to use in your 2020 projects?

I'm hoping to do my first commissioned piece by Lauren this year, I also love Kerri Rosenthal, Juniper Briggs, and using vintage art we find all over. We just bough a TON of original pieces from market and will custom frame them to give them life again. I'm also hoping to do a lot more custom furniture building and mill work from our local makers, that is not obvious art but make a HUGE difference in a home.

“That’s what original art does. It makes you feel special, and makes your home feel more personal.”
