Designer Spotlight: Tish Cyrus
I had the opportunity to create a custom #circletapestrybylaurenwilliams for the lovely, Tish Cyrus. It’s always a revealing part of the commission process for me, when I get to learn about the elements of art that trigger a collector. For Tish, the California sunset and her love for 70’s style was what brought about the design for her custom textile art piece. The “Sunset” circle tapestry hangs in her own home (see below!) which is a bohemian, vintage-lover’s dream. When Tish shared images of the “Sunset” circle installation, I was not surprised at all to learn of her her passion for interior design. In fact, building spaces that inspire “a stylish, creative and more tranquil life” is the motto of @TishCyrus_interiors and for a select group of clientele she is doing just that. I would guess that you have already seen stunning photos of the 6,800 square foot Southern California home that Tish and her design partner Mat Sanders, turned into a rock & roll, technicolor retreat for Miley Cyrus. Photos of this glamorous, yet understated “kaleidoscopic cool” project are featured below, as well as Tish’s Nashville home and renovated barn. We chatted inspiration, insight to creating a family home and her ideal design project, which she just landed!

Tish, what element do you choose first when approaching a new project? (Paint, textiles, furniture, art, marble, etc?)
It always depends on the person I’m designing for as to which element I choose first on a project. I really love when a client has a piece of furniture, a piece of art, or something personal they want to incorporate into a room I’m designing. I absolutely LOVE fabrics so I love showing a client fabric and going from there. It gives me a sense of their personal style and tastes.
What is your favorite space you’ve worked on? What was it that made it so fulfilling?
If I had to pick one space that was a favorite to work on, it’s an old barn we repurposed on a property I bought in Nashville. The barn was on the very back of the property and was so old it was leaning horribly. There were no floors, just dirt, but I absolutely loved its age and character. We had already made the decision to transform the space and had all the details in place when we were told by the city that it had to be connected to the house in some way to be a useable space. That was not fun to hear, but we made the decision to move forward. To make a long story short, we ended up moving the barn closer to the house and connected it by a breezeway/screened porch. It ended up adding even more character to the barn and was one of my favorite spaces to hang out in. It was definitely worth the move!
Currently you are doing a limited number of projects for friends and family. If you were to dream up your ideal project for a client, what would it be?
I’m actually getting ready to start on a new project that is an ideal space for me because it’s a mid century modern home. I love everything about the 70s from Fashion, Music, Home Design, etc. This project is going to be so much fun for me because I’ve always dreamed of doing a mid century, and this will be my first! We’re really going to lean into those cool 70s feeling interiors.
What types of environments inspire you the most?
Spaces that make me FEEL something inspire me most. I want them to transport me to a place, a time, or mood.
You recently commissioned Lauren for a piece of textile art. What drew you to her artwork? How did you incorporate it into your home?
Yes, I did recently commission a piece of art by Lauren which I absolutely LOVE. Like I said before, I love everything about the 70s, including macramé and fiber art. I remember the first time I saw one of Lauren’s pieces and was just blown away. I loved everything about it. The colors, but most of all the movement and texture. In my own home, I mostly stick with neutrals but I wanted to bring in a piece of art to tell the story of the room and who lives there and also bring in a little color. Everyone that knows me knows I love a beautiful Californian sunset and that’s what this piece reminds me of!
As a mom, when designing your own home what go-to elements do you include to encourage your family’s comfort and interactions?
It’s funny you ask this question, because the kids NEVER let me forget that our house in Tennessee, where they grew up, had a living room we called the WHITE ROOM because the rug, the fabric, the walls, EVERYTHING was off white. Absolutely gorgeous, but ridiculous with 5 kids. I kept a dog gate in front of the room and no one was allowed in there EVER! Looking back on it now, it seems ridiculous. Now I make sure every room in the house is beautiful but also livable.
You recently collaborated with Mat Sanders to design a home for your daughter. What was the most revealing part of this design process for you?
Teaming up to design Miley’s house with my “Design Crush” Mat Sanders was a dream come true! I think the most revealing part of this process for me was realizing that I had the ability to handle a huge project like this one. It was by far the largest project I’ve worked on. We pretty much started from scratch and took a pretty basic house and transformed it completely. It was very East Coast feeling so the first thing we did was paint the exterior black to make it feel like MILEY. After we did that, the vision became very clear.
Where is your go-to, never fail place to source unique pieces for the home?
My favorite place to source unique finds is 1st Dibs. I can go down that rabbit hole for hours on end. Most of my favorite pieces in Miley’s house are from there. I think one of the best finds was her bed. Mat found that piece and Miley and I both just fell in love with it!!!
Tish, thank you so much for taking the time to chat art and design with me. Looking forward to seeing what’s next for Tish Cyrus Interiors! Thank you also for including my artwork on your wall. It is an honor. xo, LW
