Designer Spotlight: Max Aboody Interiors

Max Aboody embarked on a career in interior design after studying womenswear at Parsons School of Design and working for top New York fashion houses. He expanded his creative work into the world of interiors using the same foundational knowledge of design learned in his earlier career.

This New York based designer combines sophisticated elegance and relaxed ease for real, everyday living. His work is eclectic and lively and exuberantly personalized for each client.

I met Max when he commissioned his first Lauren Williams Art piece, back in 2021, while designing his “Old Brookville” project near Long Island.

Join me as we learn about this cleverly refined designer, where he finds his inspiration, and what fuels his continued excitement for design.

Max, it’s great to have you on the blog. can you tell us about yourself and your interior design studio?

Thank you! I’m so happy to be included. A little bit about me. I’m an interior designer with a formal education and background in womenswear design. My approach to design is unique, in the sense that I start my process thinking about the client, and then the space. The client becomes something like a muse for the project, as if I were creating a custom collection for them. I love residential interior design because I’m able to create spaces that feel special and intimate, designed for someone in mind.

My studio is very small. Most of the time it’s just me, which my client’s like. I only take on a select amount of projects at a time to make sure each of my projects have my full attention.

How would you describe your design style and aesthetic?

My design style and aesthetic is contemporary, but with a twist. As I mentioned before, my client is my muse so my inspiration can change drastically from project to project. The common thread throughout my work is the consistency of elevated materials and a functional, momentous design. It’s all about a feeling and a moment for me. The moment surely has to last, but that initial wow factor, or change in energy when entering a room is what fuels my excitement for design.

Where do you look to source pieces for your projects?

I look for furniture all over the place. Online is a great place to start and I do a lot of my own custom furniture design with local craftsmen and workshops. For me, custom is always the way to go.

What is your approach when purchasing and incorporating artwork into your designs?

Artwork is so important for a space, and I am always encouraging my clients not to consider it as an after thought. Art changes the energy in the room, depending on it’s subject, color palette and scale. I follow many artists on social media and save works that I find in galleries and art fairs.

Why did you choose to commission Lauren's "Hendrix" textile artwork for the master bedroom in your project?

I chose to commission Lauren’s “Hendrix” textile artwork in my Old Brookville guest bedroom project because the color palette, soft texture and large scale was perfect for the space. The materiality of the work lended itself so well to a bedroom and added so much warmth to the room.

I do! One of the projects I’m most excited about is a new build in Sag Harbor, NY. I’ll be able to share more details in the next few months on social media.
