Designer Spotlight: Designing A Tiny Empire
Designing for tiny interiors is a science in which New York-based designer, Molly Torres, just may be akin to an Einstein when it comes to space planning for residential and commercial spaces in NYC and Brooklyn. Torres is the CEO of DATE Interiors, short for Designing A Tiny Empire, which she founded in 2017 after she and her husband moved into a 512 square foot studio apartment adjacent to the Empire State Building. From small beginnings, Torres has been working hard to build her own authentic empire, much like Lauren Williams, so it was only fitting to spotlight the collaboration between the two for the Foundation project.
For Torres, choosing a Lauren Williams custom piece for her client was the cherry on top of Foundation’s 2,900 square-foot New York office space, in which “every. single. detail. had intent and purpose,” said Torres. Being passionately involved in the feng shui of space planning with her California-casual--meets-Australian style with a Moroccan flair, Torres reached the conclusion of the design job only to realize a single, white “blank canvas” wall beaming her in the face. After considering shelving, magazine storage, and art, Torres came across William’s Instagram late one night and had a custom tapestry mocked up in Photoshop by the next morning, winning her client’s approval instantly.
“For me, Lauren’s art is transformative,” said Torres. “That’s such an adult-sounding, serious word, but I truly feel her work is cathartic. Each piece perfectly encompasses and balances movement, texture, and color. It’s honestly such a hard feat to accomplish, but Lauren does it with beauty and grace – I can’t be the only one who’s been a bit hypnotized by her hyper-lapse progress videos! As a creative, I’m most inspired by others who have both a strong sense of purpose and the desire to constantly evolve and learn. Lauren (and her art) truly embodies this,” said Torres.
